  1.  INSTALLATION
  2.  ************************
  3.  To install BackMail you should:
  4.  
  5.        1. Copy all of the "COM" files in the distribution archive file, i.e.:
  6.                FGROUND.COM
  7.                BGROUND.COM
  8.                BMCONFIG.COM
  9.            into the directory where you want them to live. We suggest
  10.            that you create a subdirectory called
  11.                "\BACKMAIL"
  12.            but you may use any directory you wish.
  13.  
  14.         2. Run the program called BMCONFIG. This configuration will ask
  15.            you to set:
  16.              1. The Baud rate & port for your modem.
  17.              2. The directory in where you want BackMail to put its phone
  18.                 directory and its INMAIL and OUTMAIL message files.
  19.              3. The directory where you want BackMail should put incoming
  20.                 files. Note incoming files will overwrite existing files
  21.                 with the same name so it is a good idea to store incoming files
  22.                 in a seperate directory for this purpose.

  24.         3. When you have used BMCONFIG to configure your program correctly
  25.            you can run the program by typing:
  26.                 BGROUND
  27.            at the DOS prompt. This loads the RAM resident portion of the
  28.            program.

  35.   THE FIRST TIME YOU RUN BACKMAIL

  37.        ... the program will report it cannot find copies of its INMAIL
  38.   OUTMAIL and PHONE files and ask you permission to create them. Hit "N"
  39.   to tell it to create New files.
  40.   
  41.   Once you are running you should got to the CHANGE SETUP function under the
  42.   main menu and set your:
  43.  
  44.         Phone Prefixes
  45.         ***************
  46.          Set the dialing prefixes appropriate to your phone system.
  47.  
  48.         Availability Time

  50.          This is the period of the day you will be telling other BackMailers
  51.          you are available for BackMail calls.
  52.  
  53.         Max Retrys

  55.         This is the maximum number of times you want other Backmailers
  56.         to retry calling your number if they find busy or get no answer.

  58.         Letterhead
  59.         **********
  60.         Enter the Letterhead line which will appear at the top of all of
  61.         your outgoing messages.

  65.   The file MODEMS.TXT contains information for customizing BackMail
  66.   To take advantage of all the features of your modem.

  68.   MODEM DIP SWITCHES AND INTERNAL MODEMS
  69.   ***************************************
  70.   To run your modem properly your modem must be set so that:
  71.  
  72.        1)   It sends CARRIER DETECT only when it detects a carrier. See
  73.             your modem manual to make sure that your modem is not leaving
  74.             CARRIER DETECT perpetually on.
  75.        2)   It hangs up the modem when the computer toggles DTR off. In
  76.             your manual this setting is probably
  77.             described as "DTR ENABLED".
  78.        3)   AUTOANSWER should be set OFF
  79.        
  80.   This version of BackMail incorporates modem setup strings which will enable
  81.   carrier and DTR detect on most internal modems, viz:
  82.            Carrier Enable: &C1
  83.                DTR Enable: &D2
  84.   If your internal modem does not use these values you should change the
  85.   string BackMail uses to reset your modem. To do this
  86.  
  87.        1)   Call up the CHANGE SETUP function from the main menu.
  88.        2)   Select TECHNICIAN SETTINGS
  89.        3)   Alter TECH SETTING #3.

  91.   By default tech setting 3 is '&C1&D2'.

  95.   NOTE: In order to drive your 9600 baud modem you *must* customize
  96.   BackMail's TECH settings to conform to the response codes of your
  97.   modem. Consult Modems.TXT for details.

  99. REGISTRATION IS A LEGAL TRANSACTION

  101.         Registration is a legal transaction. A (very) few users have failed
  102. to appreciate this and have tried registering phoney credit cards numbers.
  103. Some have offered the excuse that they were "testing" the system and
  104. have been surprised that we have responded in the same way that any
  105. business would when you "test" them with a phoney credit card. Do not
  106. attempt such "tests"! They constitute credit card fraud and abuse of an 800
  107. number. Credit card companies take a dim view of the former and the phone
  108. company takes a dim view of the latter. The latter can locate you and the
  109. former can make you extremely uncomfortable... don't do it.

  111. VERSION 1.1
  112. ************
  113. The major differences between Version 1.1 and Version 1.0 are:
  114.  
  115.         - The "Digit Music Warning" feature of vers 1.0 is not
  116.           supported by vers 1.1.
  117.  
  118.         - Version 1.1 supports the utility "ACTIVE.COM" which will enables
  119.           you to activate or suspend BackMail from a batch file.
  120.  
  121.         - Version 1.1 supports phone dialing suffixes in addition to
  122.           prefixes and has an enhanced display of suffix an number formats.
  123.  
  124.         - Version 1.1. supports a new function "Answer Mode" under the
  125.           CHANGE SETUP. When this mode is enabled BackMail will only answer
  126.           the phone during your own declared AVAILABILTY TIME.

  128. Version Upgrades

  130.         If you are already a registered user of version 1.0 you can upgrade to
  131. version 1.1 at no charge. However you *will* have to re-register your phone
  132. number with the new code. You should fill out the registration form properly
  133. including accurate credit card information, otherwise your registration
  134. will run afoul of our credit card verification software. Include a note
  135. in the registration "adress" fields indicating that you are re-registering.
